Nazca - Chauchilla Cemetery

This picture (below) gives you an idea of what most of Peru - between the coast and the Andes - looks like. A flat, dusty grey/brown moonscape.

The ancient peoples would bury the dead in simple underground tombs. Grave robbers and modern-day archeologists would dig up these tombs - one for treasure and the other for research. A dozen of these tombs - and the semi-mummified remains - have been left open as a tourist attraction. A bit kooky if you ask me.
